These hollow turnings are from found Sierra Nevada Foothill wood of the forests of Northern California. Turned green with the bark retained to reference the nature of the tree that conributed these pieces. Dried slowly and then finished, the result is often a unique shape and texture as the wood cells and fibers retreat in their individual way.
These containers invite exploration within. Often made of contrasting woods from neighboring trees or woodlands. I think they enjoy the company of familiar woodland neighbors.
These are meaningful designs to me. A furnishing for a compact, secular, meditative shrine. A personal space to flow attention and intention to a thought or event that is a present concern or hope in one's life. The owner will complete the piece through his or her use of it. Perhaps placing a candle, incense or other object, or thought, or wish, in the center.
This English Walnut Urn has retained bark that is transitioned through the cambium bark (the growth layer) to the wood underneath. The carved top knobs lock the top to the vessel by brass nuts and threaded rods. Designed and made to order.
